この曲は、愛している人の元から立ち去ることがどれほど辛く難しいことかというメッセージが込められています。でも、「そもそも何で別れないといけないの？」と疑問に思ったので、歌詞を読み進めました。
'set them free'というフレーズがあります。これは、「束縛をしない」という意です。
恐らく、'If you love somebody, set them free.' ということだと思います。彼の中での葛藤は、心から愛している人なら、その人には自由であってほしい。でも、孤独になるのは嫌だから別れたくない。
それが、表現されている部分は、'And it's so hard to do' 'And it's so easy to say' ('it'は「別れる」という事を指している）
「愛しの人と別れるということは簡単だけど、そんな実際に別れるとなるとできないよ」
