where vs in which

The field is the place. I saw sheep in the field yesterday.

この２つの文を１つの文にすると、２パターンあります。

1. The field is the place where I saw sheep yesterday.

2. The field is the place in which I saw sheep yesterday.

ですが、2はよりフォーマルな表現になります！

なんで？？

in which は where に置き換えることができます、

しかし at which も on which も where に置き換えることができます。

つまり、同じwhereでも、少し意味が異なります。情報をくわしくはっきりさせるために、この２番の場合は in which を使っています。
